Smoke alarm safety facts:
- Usually when a smoke alarm fails to operate it is because the batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead.
- Three out of every five fire deaths occur result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
- NFPA’s 2014 Fire Prevention week theme is “Working Smoke Alarms save Lives. Test yours Today!”
- You should test a smoke alarm by pushing the button with your finger.
- You should test your smoke alarms at least once every month.
- A smoke alarm should be installed inside each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home.
- Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years from manufacture.
- If your smoke alarm sounds whenever you cook you should replace the smoke alarm with a photoelectric type alarm and be sure that the alarm is at least 10 feet from the stove.
- If your smoke alarm makes a chirping sound, you should replace the battery.
- With today’s modern furnishings and construction, you may have as little as 3 minutes to escape a home fire.
- If the smoke alarm sounds you should stop what you are doing and get outside.
